What matters most for South Africa

Your rand goes further than you think

A UK or Australian degree usually means paying full international tuition abroad and a weak rand working against you. In Dubai you can earn a British, Australian or American degree closer to home, often at a lower total cost — and legal, tax-free part-time work helps stretch every rand you spend.

Cheaper than flying to the UK or Australia

The same-brand branch-campus degree in Dubai frequently costs less overall than studying at the home campus — shorter, cheaper flights and a lower cost of living help too. We show you the real numbers in rand before you commit.

Earn while you study — and keep it all

There's no income tax in the UAE, so part-time earnings stay in your pocket. Combined with scholarships, that makes the budget far more manageable than a South African family often expects.

🗣️ South Africans study in English, so a Medium-of-Instruction (MOI) letter from your school or university usually replaces IELTS — otherwise the university's own English test or Duolingo will do.
The money

What it costs — in plain numbers

Budget roughly AED 30,000–70,000 a year for tuition (we'll convert the exact figure to South African rand for your chosen university), plus visa, insurance and living costs. Shared living runs from around AED 2,500 a month.

South Africa FAQ

Questions South Africans ask

Will a Dubai degree be recognised back in South Africa?
Yes. Most Dubai universities are UK, Australian or American branch campuses awarding the exact same degree as their home campus, which is internationally recognised. We confirm the university and your specific programme are properly accredited (KHDA/CAA) before you pay.
Do I need IELTS as a South African?
Usually not. Because you studied in English, a Medium-of-Instruction (MOI) letter from your school or university normally satisfies the English requirement. If a university still asks, its own internal English test or Duolingo is an easy alternative.
Is it safe, and how far is home?
Dubai is one of the safest major cities in the world, which is exactly why many South African families choose it. Johannesburg and Cape Town have direct flights of around 8 hours, so visits home are quick and affordable.
How do I get my matric and degree certificates accepted?
Your documents must be attested in South Africa (DIRCO), legalised by the UAE embassy, then attested by MOFAIC in the UAE. The UAE is not part of the Apostille Convention, so an apostille alone is not enough — you need full legalisation. We walk you through every step.

Official facts & sources

The facts below come from official UAE authorities and are dated. Rules change — always re-check the source before you apply.

🛂 Student visa

A UAE student residence visa is issued for one year at a time, renewable on proof of continued study, and is sponsored by your accredited university or college (or a UAE-resident parent). Entry permits and the Emirates ID are handled federally by ICP; residency in Dubai by GDRFA Dubai.

🎓 A recognised degree

Private universities in Dubai and their programmes are licensed by KHDA (its UQAIB board vets international branch campuses); federal-system programmes are accredited by the CAA. Confirm your university and your specific programme are listed before you pay.

📑 Attestation from South Africa

Your degree and certificates must be attested in South Africa (its Ministry of Foreign Affairs), legalised by the UAE embassy, and then attested by MOFAIC inside the UAE. The UAE is not part of the Apostille Convention, so an apostille alone is not accepted — you need full legalisation.
