Your university sponsors the visa, but the slow part is usually yours: getting your certificates attested at home and starting early enough. Below are the real fees universities publish, a 10-step timeline, and the attestation route for India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nigeria.
In Dubai the university acts as your "host and guarantor" and applies for the visa. The other option is sponsorship by a parent who already lives in the UAE. You can't sponsor yourself on a student visa.
The visa is issued for one year at a time and renewed each year on proof that you're still enrolled. Some universities keep it active for a short period after you graduate (AUD: 3 months).
There's no passport sticker any more: since 2022 the residence visa lives on your Emirates ID, and the visa and ID are applied for together on one form.
Attestation proves your certificate is genuine (a chain of stamps in your country and then the UAE). Equivalency is the UAE recognising your qualification: the Ministry of Education does it for school certificates (needed for bachelor's entry) and the Ministry of Higher Education for degrees (needed for master's entry), now a two-stage process with verification through Dataflow or QuadraBay that takes about 30 working days. Many universities, including free-zone campuses such as Heriot-Watt Dubai, give you one semester of provisional admission to complete it. Ask your admissions office exactly what they need, and when.
There's no single government price for students: each university bundles the visa differently. These are the figures three universities publish.

The UAE is not part of the Apostille Convention, so an apostille is not enough. Your documents go through a chain: your country, then your foreign ministry, then the UAE. The final UAE step is now digital (UAE PASS on mofa.gov.ae, courier pickup, e-attested copy by email, usually 2–3 business days). Originals only, and laminated documents are rejected.

We found no official UAE rule that bars Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi or Nigerian students. The reports of restrictions in 2025 were about tourist, transit and work visas, and in Pakistan's and Bangladesh's case UAE and embassy officials publicly denied a ban. What does happen is longer queues at busy times, so start early.
You need a MOHRE student work permit: valid 3 months, AED 50 federal fee, a contract with a MOHRE-registered employer, and your university's agreement. Not every university agrees: Middlesex Dubai, for example, doesn't allow part-time work on its student visa. Check your university's policy before you count on income.
The official UAE portal says family members of foreign university students can live in the UAE if the student can afford suitable housing. The exact requirements are assessed case by case, so confirm with your university before planning it.
