A few Canada-specific things that make the difference between a good year and a great one.
Air Canada flies direct from Vancouver to Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne (about 15–16 hours); from Toronto or Montreal you'll connect through Vancouver or an Asian hub. Book once your 417 is granted — it's linked to your passport.
Escape the Canadian winter: December–February is Australia's summer, when hospitality, events and farm work are hiring hardest. September–November (spring) is milder and a great time to settle before peak season.

So your first days are about the adventure, not the paperwork.
