Learning English while living in Australia is one of the most life-changing experiences: in just a few months you go from studying it in a classroom to using it every day, at work, with friends and on the street. And best of all: you can work legally while you study to help with your expenses. In this guide we explain how it works in 2026, how much it really costs and how to take the step without making mistakes.
1. Why learn English in Australia
- Total immersion: you learn much faster because you live the language 24/7, not just in class.
- You can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during your course (with no limit during holidays) and practise English in a real environment.
- Top-quality schools in safe cities like Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane.
- A gateway: English is the first step before later doing a vocational course (VET) or university.
- International experience that adds a great deal to your CV.
2. What an ELICOS course is
ELICOS stands for English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students: the official English courses for international students in Australia. They are the most common and affordable option to get started, and come in several types:
- General English β the most popular; you improve grammar, vocabulary and conversation.
- Exam preparation β IELTS, Cambridge or PTE, if you need an official certificate.
- Business English β focused on the working and professional world.
- Academic English (EAP) β for those who later want to continue with VET or university.
3. Levels: can I start from scratch?
Yes. ELICOS schools usually have 5 to 7 levels, from Beginner / Elementary to Advanced. On arrival you take a level test and are placed in the group that matches you, so you don't need to know English to start. The key is consistency: most students move up one or two levels every few months.
4. How much it costs to study English in Australia in 2026
Indicative figures (they vary by school, city and promotions). On the video call we give you a realistic budget for your case:
| Item | Approximate cost (AUD) |
|---|---|
| English course (ELICOS) | $200 β $300 / week |
| School enrolment fee | $200 β $300 (one-off) |
| Materials / books | $10 β $20 / week |
| Student visa (official Government fee) | from $2,000 |
| OSHC health insurance | ~$52 / month |
| Funds to demonstrate (12 months) | ~$29,710 |
| Cost of living (accommodation, foodβ¦) | $1,500 β $2,000 / month |
The visa fee and the amount of funds are set by the Australian Government and can change (they are usually updated in July). Always check at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au.
5. Which visa do I need to study English?
If the course lasts more than 12 weeks, you need the student visa (subclass 500), the same one used for VET or university. If you are only doing a very short course (as a tourist), there are other, more limited options that do not allow you to work. In most cases the subclass 500 is the best fit. We explain the full requirements in our student visa guide.

- You can work up to 48 hours every two weeks while your course is in session.
- No hour limit during the official course holidays.
- Typical student jobs: hospitality, cafés, cleaning, retail, delivery⦠ideal for practising English and covering expenses.
- The first ~AUD $18,200 per year are tax-free.
7. How to choose the right English school
Not all schools are the same. These are the things that really matter (and that we check for you):
- That it is registered with CRICOS and has a genuinely good reputation.
- An "English only" policy: that only English is spoken in class (key if there are many Spanish speakers).
- Location: close to where you'll live and with good transport.
- Schedules (morning or afternoon) that allow you to work.
- Real value for money and current promotions.
8. What you can do after English
Many students start with English and then continue with a vocational course (VET) or university, extending their visa. It is a very common path: first you reach the required English level and then you access a program that improves your professional profile. We help you plan that route from the start so you don't waste time or money.
