One of Australia's great advantages over other destinations is that you don't have to go alone: the student visa lets you include your partner and your children as dependents. For many families it is the way to share an international experience together while one of them studies and, in many cases, both can work. Here we explain how it works in 2026.
Who counts as a dependent
The student visa (subclass 500) lets you include the members of your family unit (member of the family unit):
- Your partner (spouse or de facto partner, by demonstrating the relationship).
- Your dependent children (usually minors).
They can apply for the visa with you from the start or join later (subsequent entrant), if you declare them correctly. The final decision rests with the Department of Home Affairs.
Can my partner work?
In many cases yes, and it is one of the great attractions:
- If you study an English or VET course, your dependent partner can usually work with an hour limit (the same as you).
- If you study a master's or doctorate, in many cases the partner can work with no hour limit.
This can change the family budget a lot. The exact conditions depend on the course and the current rules; we review this in your specific case.
Children and school
Dependent children of school age can study in Australia. Keep in mind that, depending on the state and the situation, there may be school fees for children of student visa holders in public schools. We help you anticipate that cost so it doesn't catch you by surprise.
Extra funds to demonstrate
When you include dependents, the Government requires additional funds for each family member, on top of the amount for the main student (which is around AUD $29,710 for 12 months). There is also an extra cost for each dependent in the visa fee.

Do we apply together or separately?
